Tatagan Ayité had a strong influence on his time in Aného. Trained in the many ways of dealing and trading with the Portuguese, the Dutch and other sailors who landed on the Petit-Popo slave coast, Ayité was soon seen by his entourage as the man who, in the art of conducting transactions with the Europeans, could measure up to them.

This is how he settled in Agbodji, where he conducted his business with the Portuguese and other Europeans. His business quickly grew beyond the city of Aného.

A talented negotiator and formidable trader, his ambition was to extend his trade all along the East Coast. Commercial prospecting in Ouidah, coconut plantations in Grand-Popo, friendly visits and business deals in Abomey, Tatagan Ayité was all over the map. He frequently visited King Behanzin of Abomey. As a friend and reliable ally, he conducted transactions with all the local chiefs in the region and with those he met along the way.
